Teaching the Teacher — Teacher Training at Green Learning Academy

“The only time my education was interrupted was when I was in school.”
—George Bernard Shaw

Three days of Teaching the Teacher in Calgary will send electric boldness coursing through the exposed veins of new ideas. Spend three days with Jodie Gateman, the head of a trailblazing school that’s pioneering highly effective techniques in education, and you’ll quickly know that all you know is that you don’t know. But you’ll learn.

All it takes is three days to change the way you conceive education. After Teaching the Teacher, you will understand exactly why your students seem to not care and how you can change that.

In just one weekend, from Thursday to Saturday, you will gain clear objectives. New teaching techniques. Insights into the world’s most progressive teaching philosophy.

Teaching the Teacher means you will mark less at home.
Teaching the Teacher means you will use your classroom time more effectively.
Teaching the Teacher means your students will be more engaged in their material.

You’ll be able to put to use what you learn in this class the very next day. And it will revolutionize your classroom. You’ll return home from this class with new techniques and a series of specific strategies and perspectives that will give you and your student the ability to think outside the box consciously, not serendipitously.

That alone is worth the price of admission.

In addition, you’ll spend three days with Mrs Gateman to ask her any questions you’d like about Student-Directed Teaching. Experts across North America jockey for position to speak to her. You get to vault right to the front of the line and have all your curiosities answered.

When you arrive, your mind will gape in wonder at just how much more to education there is. Don’t be afraid — this is only the beginning.

Calgary - On Thursday Oct. 29, Jodie Gateman was recognized as one of Avenue Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 shining stars for her leadership and accomplishments as an entrepreneur, child education advocate and contributor to the community.

Jodie is the co-founder and Executive Director of Green Learning Academy, a private nonprofit school offering kindergarten to Grade 9. Their philosophy is “Teaching HOW to THINK not what to think. www.greenlearning.com. She strives to make a difference by pushing the boundaries of traditional education.

“Creativity is being drained out of young kids as they go through school. Without new ideas we can’t possibly grow on an economic basis” Jodie Gateman

Her ground breaking teaching methodologies in Student-Directed Teaching, entrepreneurial accomplishments and innovative thinking have made her a leader in her field. She has been invited to be a key note speaker at many conferences across Canada as well in the United States. Topics include: education trends, hot topics such as challenging traditional teaching styles, bullying and peer pressure, building a child’s esteem and also sharing valuable parenting tips on what works what doesn’t and why.

In 2007, Gateman created Green Learning Foundation (GLF), a registered charitable organization that facilitates children learning how to become true innovative, critical thinkers. GLF supports breaking away from the traditional method of education, giving students the opportunity to explore the world around them according to their individual learning preferences. One of the ways GLF accomplishes this is by creating scholarship opportunities for students who would otherwise be unable to benefit from this method of learning and education. The Foundation also supports a number of community programs and educational events throughout Calgary and the surrounding areas. To date over $25,000 in scholarships have been given out.

In 2008 Jodie Gateman created the Calgary Oscars, an awards gala with a goal to bring together businesses, small and large, media and the public to celebrate excellence. The gala was designed by Calgarians for Calgarians rewarding and recognizing businesses for distinction in a variety of industries and categories. This year’s event is planned for March 6, 2010. Nominations begin Nov. 15, 2009 at www.calgaryoscars.ca.

Jodie continues to be a contributor to our community whether it is through her past involvement in politics, promoting Calgary businesses, as an entrepreneur or as a leader in spear heading new education trends and programs that positively impact our Calgary community.

“Avenue magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 is our annual selection of Calgary’s brightest and most active leaders under the age of 40,” says Käthe Lemon, editor of Avenue. “Top 40s are movers and shakers, industry innovators and community builders in every realm, from business and politics to education, arts, fashion, design, sport and culture. They are committed to high personal career achievements, are dedicated to building community in the city or in their industry, and are helping to raise the profile of Calgary. This year’s Top 40s are celebrated in the November issue of Avenue magazine and on avenuecalgary.com.”
