DON & ANNE GREEN

Don and Anne Green together have over 70 years experience in the education world. They have been on the front lines in many education positions from teacher, principal, superintendent to educational consultants. Their differentiation work with the Centre for Gifted Education at the University of Calgary is still ongoing today.

Ann Green is well knowing in education circles for creating independent learning in the classroom. This independent learning is fostered through a Community of Learners, where students have choices and make decisions. She has travelled through out Western Canada teaching how to create a Community of Learners within the classroom; how to let the curriculum and resources support rather then lead the learning; and demonstrates how to individualize each child's education.

Ann Green, B.ED., has been teaching for over thirty years. Passionate about children and learning, she is committed to helping students help themselves. She has published numerous articles, speaks at conferences and teaches teachers across Western Canada. In 1992, she received the William C. McMaster award for outstanding achievement in using children's literature to promote the love of reading.)

“The notion that students, at a very young age, are capable of making decisions according to their needs is still unacceptable to many educators. However, we know students can be successful in their search for knowledge when pursuing a passion.”

“As a young child I could be found skipping down a lane through a forest of tall trees – tall, at least, to a preschooler – on my way to my grandmother’s house. It was an enchanting adventure as I continued the journey to my grandmother’s.

I raced across the yard to find the door ajar and “Gamma” waiting for me. We shared storybooks, as we rocked the new and exotic place all around the world. That was a magical time for me, which came to an end when I started school. This new experience didn’t build onto my first encounters with authors and books. The books at school had three leading characters. Dick, Jane and Sally who spent their entire time running, jumping or playing. You might say I felt a loss of paradise at a very early age.”

Don Green has many years of teaching and educational consulting he applies those to the problem of how to apply in the classroom recent research in the fields of education and intelligence. The unique solution - to offer different Teaching Styles - is revolutionary and continues to be applied in more and more
classrooms.

Offering different Teaching Styles allows students to be active learners, addresses the needs of all students, uses the curriculum as a basis for learning, improves students marks, decreases discipline problems, and reduces stress and burn out. Essentially it allows students to learn beyond the desk.

“Students need to become active learners rather than just absorbers of knowledge.”   Don Green
